Delcroix hat-trick fires Lugano top; Haiti qualify for CNL quarter-finals
The headline belongs to Hannes Delcroix. The Haitian centre-back scored a stunning hat-trick for Swiss Super League leaders FC Lugano, netting three times between the 35th minute and full time to underline his extraordinary form at club level. Lugano are averaging three goals per game this season and return to action on 10 October, hosting mid-table FC Luzern at the AIL Arena. For a defender to register a hat-trick is rare at any level; at the summit of Swiss football, it is exceptional.
The national-team picture also carries weight. Haiti concluded their CONCACAF Nations League League A Group A campaign with four matches played: three wins (3-2 vs Trinidad & Tobago, 2-0 vs Costa Rica, 4-1 vs Dominican Republic) and one defeat (0-2 vs Costa Rica on 4 October), finishing second on nine points and qualifying for the quarter-finals. Ruben Providence scored twice in the 4-1 win away to the Dominican Republic on 1 October, with Yassin Fortuné also on the scoresheet as a substitute. Wilson Isidor injury rumours ahead of the Costa Rica match were subsequently dismissed; he returns fit to Sunderland. Alexandre Pierre started all four Nations League matches in goal, keeping one clean sheet.
